First Decent Nor'easter of the season hits on August 30th, 2017. Still Flooded Down in Texas. North Korea tests Hydrogen Bomb, and the 26th Surf Family Robinson!

This swell came at a perfect time for all of us. It had been awhile for most of the NNE crew. Though there was that motivated contingent of surfers who went south to get some GERT Surf. And by all accounts, they all scored. GERT was a bust up here. But this Nor'easter? She was a welcomed swell. Not for nothing folks but I have always said that our Nor'easters are better than Hurricanes. And so far this season, I'm right. Though I just watched the latest update on IRMA and she could be right in our window with a favorable swell direction. So let us be vigil on IRMA.

So I swam out and shot some water pics during this last swell. And so did a few others. I've got 12 galleries this week. Can you believe it? 12 galleries numbering close to 1,000 pics. Plus I shot a million miles of video. I know it sounds crazy, but this is the digital world now. We can shoot as much as we want and not worry about the cost. Just delete the ones you don't want or like.

But getting back to these water pics. I had two cameras with me. My Canon D 30 and my GoPro. I must of looked like a full blown kook out there. I was wearing my old Rick Griffin hat, and that lasted all of 10 minutes before it was blasted off my head. DOH!

If anyone happens to find an orange baseball style hat with a Rick Griffin Surfing Eyeball on the front, could you please hold it for me? I'd certainly appreciate it.

I think this was shot with the GoPro. Yes it was, I see the wide angle perspective. Oh did I mention that the water was warm? Well it was. I was in the water shooting for over two hours. It was worth every minute.

I was liking the long shots. Oh, and these were all video clips. So what you're seeing here is video frame grabs. I love using slow motion for the empty wave clips. I guess I'm old school when it comes to empty waves. But honestly? Young or old, you need to slow it down when shooting an empty wave. Unless of course your shooting huge Pipe of some other massive barrel. And even then, you'll notice that the guys shooting those breaks also use slo mo.

This pic above is from Brian Thacker. I heard he caught a fin in his head.
Ouch. That comes with the territory. Those of us who shoot in the water have an understanding with the riders we're shooting. And it's really quite simple. Or at least it is with me. "DON'T YOU DARE HIT ME!" I like to bring that up before I start swimming out. I often repeat that in case they didn't hear me the first time.

The surfers love to get close to the cameras. In fact, when I was out shooting empty waves this week, I had to keep telling the surfers who would paddle directly out in front of me trying to get their pic taken, that I'm not shooting "surfers". Didn't make a difference. They came
like little puppies.

They all want their pic taken. It wouldn't be so bad, if they were people I knew, and more importantly, they knew how to surf. I know I know, we all started out somewhere. It's just that I'm not going to document your first waves on film, when I am on a mission. Ask me later and I'd probably take some pics of you. And of course charge you a few pennies. But hey, I don't know a single surfer on the planet who does not want a photo of them surfing. Not a single one. And if they tell you any different, they are lying through their teeth.

I'm happy to take your photo when I'm shooting surfers. That's what I do.

This is another Brian Thacker pic. The guy paddling on the shoulder is Mike Rosa. The goofy foot in the barrel is Jesse Gould. I love this pic. There's so much going on here. I love how Mike is getting one last look at Jesse before he goes over the top. Jesse is a great tube rider. He has such a cool style. He's one of those surfers that I can pick out of a crowded line-up, on any given day around here. I'm stoked that Brian got this pic.

So this last water pic is by Danny Dillon. I just met him for the first time this past week. I know his brother Sean who works at the shop. He seems like a nice kid. He has the bug which is nice to see in the younger generation. Not many of today's surfers have the patience to be a photographer. Hell, not many had the patience since they started taking surf photos.

The one simple rule I tell any new surf photographer who is also a surfer is,

"YOU NEED TO SHOOT FIRST-THEM GO CATCH A FEW WAVES."

I learned that one the hard way. The reason being is, the surf and conditions are typically better early in the day. So many things can happen. The swell could drop, the wind could switch, the sun could go away. SHOOT FIRST.

Now for Some International News
I didn't think it would be very long before we heard back from that nut job in North Korea. Look at this photo. It is real. It is Not photo-shopped. WTF is going on here???

Can you imagine if TRUMP did this? He's giving one of his uncles a piggy back ride! This lunatic just tested their FIRST EVER Hydrogen Bomb! Hello? Forget all the other BS we're all talking about. This little Crazy haircut Monster is not going to go away.

This is whacked . Look st this Chart. Do you see a progression? This shit is scary. They (he) hates us. They would love to see the USA go up in smoke.
Pay attention here folks.
Pay close attention.

KSM Photoshop of the Week
This is the FIRST EVER photo of North Korea's Nuclear Warhead. And now that I see it up close. I can see the danger. If I'm not mistaken, that warhead looks an awful lot like KSM. Do you see it people? See Kim touching the ratty hair of KSM? Oh yeah, this shit is real scary...

So my friends, please take advantage of this weekly photo shop of the mastermind who planned 9-11 and resulted in the deaths of 3,000 innocent civilians by KSM (Khalid Sheik Mohammed).

*Note to self -must pick up a case of TNT at Home Depot this week.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY Hoku Nichols September 7th, 2017!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY Max Fatello September 14th, 2017!
REST IN PEACE Uncle Chuck.

REST IN PEACE "Gidget" October 2001-August 2017

Gidget was the beloved pet of Dave, Heather, and Veda Cropper. She passed away after 16 wonderful years. May she rest in peace. And watch over her loving family.

Prayers and positive thoughts to Erica Nardone's recovery.

And this JUST IN. I am holding off the release of this movie until Thanksgiving. We need a few more big swells to make this film legit. So far so good. We just need a few more head high and bigger swells. If you are a woman or you know any women or girls that can surf. *Especially if they are shortboarders. Please have them get in touch with me. I keep meeting more and more women who have been surfing around these parts, and have just been flying under the radar. So help me pass the word.

GERTRUDE August 17-2017 from Ralph's Pic Of The Week on Vimeo.

Hurricane GERT was a bust in NH. The long arm of Cape Cod blocked any chance of a swell reaching our shoreline. The call was to head down south, or to go further north. Instead, I hung around hoping and waiting for something. Eventually, a little something did show up late on the day after, and the local longboard crew were on hand to take advantage of the small, but glassy waves. Mikey Moran, Kyle Linseman, Pev, Duffy, Kevin Rafferty, and a couple of shortboarders. Kai Nichols (Happy Birthday) and Crowley. *Oh and the debut of Jonah Kirby made the final cut. Xavier Rudd provides the soundtrack.

HIT THE BEACH from Ralph's Pic Of The Week on Vimeo.

Along with help from the ESA-NNE, Joe Gangi's Fruit company, The Town of Hampton, The HPD, the HFD, and the many many wonderful Volunteers who show up every year. This coming Friday August 25th, 2017 will be out tenth anniversary. TEN YEARS! "If We Say It's Safe To Surf! It's Safe To Surf!!!

Surfing With Smiles 8-10-17 from Ralph's Pic Of The Week on Vimeo.

The last and the "BEST" Surfing With Smiles of the Summer of 2017. Perfect weather, sun, surf, and warm water. Smiles for everyone. Thank you to the many Volunteers. * A special thanks to the Grondin family who suffered the loss of a loved one just days before this event. Unless you knew firsthand, they were all about keeping those kids smiling. All you guys Rock! Seeing the smiles on these kid's faces makes every single minute of preparation worth it. Hopefully, we'll see you all next summer. Keep smiling all year round.

SURFING WITH SMILES II July 25th, 2017 from Ralph's Pic Of The Week on Vimeo.|

The second SURFING WITH SMILES of the 2017 Summer Season. It is exactly what the title says. Try not smiling, while watching these beautiful kids with autism, surfing at North Beach, in Hampton, NH. "Surfing with Smiles" is now in it's 8th year. Special thanks to Lindsay Mercer, Dave Cropper, Kevin Grondin and the many many wonderful volunteers. There are literally too many to name. The kids and their parents love you all. Music is by Ty Tabor the song is YOUR EYES off the Safety CD.

SURFING WITH SMILES June 2017 from Ralph's Pic Of The Week on Vimeo

The first of three "Surfing With Smiles" this Summer of 2017. Thanks to Cinnamon Rainbows, and all the Volunteers. You guys Rock! Hard not to smile, watching these kids with Autism riding waves. Another example of what surfing can do for your soul. *Special Thanks to my little assistant "Bennett" who actually shot one of the rides. He was pretty stoked about my cameras. and wanted so badly to try one. So I set him up for one shot. He was more steady than I was. I told him and his mother, "I'm gonna have to give him credit on the edit." Prepare to be stoked my friends. Prepare to be stoked.
